Broad Action against Piracy - How to Find and Stop Illegal Streaming & Downloading
Action against site owners
By finding the web sites and blogs that provide links to illegal content of your material, we can find their owners and then by contacting the domain registrars or site owners and web hosts, we can shut down the operation of such sites. We will also get the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to take action to stop illegal uploading of copyrighted material and your intellectual property. Usually it will be the site owners or their partners who will upload the content to P2P or other servers and then link to the material from their sites.
Action against end-users
In America, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) works with several ISPs on a voluntary graduated response program to copyright violations. Under the program, ISPs would alert subscribers to copyright infringement notices and carry out a series of escalating sanctions including Internet accounts being cut off. The RIAA also works closely with the Attorney Generals in different states in prosecuting the offenders.
The same method can also be used in India and other countries where people illegally download movies and music or watch live streaming of sports events. We can legally go after the ISPs to find the accounts of the subscribers who download illegally.
When the streaming is LIVE
Unlike a movie which is uploaded and then shared between users over a period of time, tracking and stopping live sports and other events is different. Here the programming from live events is being taken from satellite feeds and streamed to anyone on the internet.
Since this has to be found out and stopped in real time, 24/7 monitoring is necessary especially when there is a live event - like a cricket match - is going on. Tracking web sites offering illegal streaming also consists of finding sites that provide the links and passwords necessary to view them. In this scenario, we can take legal action against the ISPs hosting the sites as well as the sites providing the links and passwords.

Live Illegal Streaming of Sporting Events
|
Internet has made the web and any content that can be shared through it global. Sports broadcasters and TV companies spend millions of dollars on the creation and distribution of events. However fans may not be able to get to watch the games due to either non-availability where they live or due to the cost factor involved in pay-per-view matches and events. This is where the illegal p2p servers and web sites come into picture. While the video sharing and watching itself is free for the fans, these sites make their revenue through ads, banners and pop-ups on their pages.
There are numerous sites that offer links to both the software used to watch the p2p games, as well as links to the streams for each particular game. For a regular fan, finding such a site is not difficult. Fan sites with active forum communities usually share the links to one another.
|
There are also the search engines that provide the links of such sites without bothering to check if they are doing illegal broadcasts.
This is where we come into picture. Closing the servers itself will be difficult, as most of them will be operating from countries that don't have strict internet laws governing such operations. But we can go after companies and individuals creating blogs and registering domains to host and share such information and stream videos by embedding them. Once we can effectively stop them from profiting, these sites will stop streaming / hosting your intellectual property. Since there is no income, such groups will stop uploading live events to p2p servers.
